Bali's Rainy Season Is Late in 2026: What BMKG Just Said
Bali's rainy season is running late this year. Indonesia's meteorology agency, BMKG, confirmed it in a briefing on 22 September 2026: a very strong El Nino, stacked on top of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, has pushed the 2026/27 wet season back across most of the country. For Bali, the first real rains are now expected in late November, and across most of the island, December.
That is roughly three to six weeks later than a normal year. If you are holding an October or November booking, you have quietly been handed more dry days than you paid for. If you are coming in January, very little changes.
Here is what was actually announced, what it means month by month in Canggu, and the part of this story that most travel writing leaves out.

What BMKG actually announced on 22 September
BMKG is Indonesia's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency - the official source for this, not a weather app. At its seasonal briefing on 22 September 2026 it forecast that 529 of Indonesia's season zones, covering 61.08 percent of the country's land area, will see a delayed start to the 2026/27 rainy season. Most of those zones are now expected to begin in November or December.
The driver is two climate patterns arriving at once. A very strong El Nino pulls warm water and rainfall east across the Pacific, away from Indonesia. A positive Indian Ocean Dipole cools the sea to Indonesia's west and does much the same thing from the other side. Individually, either one suppresses rain. Together they compound.
The second finding got less attention and matters more: the season will be shorter as well as later. BMKG flagged 482 zones facing a below-average wet season, with El Nino conditions forecast to persist into the first quarter of 2027.
So when does it actually start raining in Bali?
The regional office in Denpasar gives the Bali-specific answer: some parts of the island start in late November 2026, and the majority in December 2026. Peak rainfall arrives later still - January 2027 for central Bali, February 2027 for most of the rest.
Translated into something useful for Canggu:
October 2026 - effectively dry. Afternoon cloud build-up, the occasional short burst, nothing that reorganises a day.
November 2026 - the turn. Expect the first proper evening downpours toward the end of the month rather than the start.
December 2026 - wet season proper, which in Bali still means sun for most of the day and rain in concentrated bursts.
January and February 2027 - the peak, and the wettest weeks of the cycle.
One honest caveat: a seasonal onset forecast is a probability, not a diary entry. BMKG is telling you where the odds sit, not guaranteeing a dry 3 November. Plan with it. Don't bet the trip on it.

What a late wet season means for an October or November trip
Mostly good, if you are the one visiting. The dry-season wind pattern that keeps Bali's west coast clean holds on longer, which is why October already had a reputation among surfers before any of this. Roads stay passable. Sunsets stay reliable. And it lands in the shoulder window, when Canggu has stopped heaving and rates have come off the August peak. Our month-by-month guide to visiting Bali covers how those weeks usually behave.
The trade-off is heat without release. Long dry spells mean high humidity with none of the cooling a decent downpour delivers, more dust on the back roads through Padonan, and a longer window for regional haze to drift in. None of that is a reason to change plans. It is a reason to book somewhere with shade, a pool and air conditioning that works.
A late monsoon is a gift if you are visiting and a problem if you live here. Both things are true at the same time. - Evarah Collection, Padonan
The part nobody puts in a travel blog
Bali has been in drought for most of 2026, with the island's disaster agency running water tankers to families in the driest districts. A late rainy season extends that. It also compresses the planting window for subak, the thousand-year-old irrigation cooperative that decides when Bali's rice goes in the ground, and it thins the groundwater recharge that carries the island through to the next dry season.
For a guest, the practical version is short. Villas in Canggu are not running out of water, and nobody is asking you to skip a shower. But a forty-minute shower in a drought year is a choice, and draining and refilling a private pool because it looked cloudy is a worse one. Our earlier piece on Bali's 2026 drought has the fuller picture.
How to plan around it from a Canggu villa
Book October and November for dry days, but pack a light rain layer for evenings from roughly the third week of November.
Keep one flexible day a week. Ubud and Nusa Penida are both far better on a clear morning than a grey one.
Do anything outdoors before noon. When the rain does arrive, it arrives late in the day.
Take covered outdoor space seriously. A private pool and a covered bar beat a hotel lobby the moment the sky opens.
Use water like it is finite, because in Bali this year it is.
Frequently asked questions
When does the rainy season start in Bali in 2026?
Later than usual. BMKG's 22 September 2026 forecast puts the start in late November 2026 for parts of Bali and December 2026 for most of the island, against a typical onset around late October or early November.
Is October 2026 a good time to visit Bali?
Yes, and this year unusually so. October is already shoulder season - quieter than August, cheaper, with clean surf - and the delayed wet season means the first real rains are unlikely to land before you leave.
Will it rain every day in Bali in December 2026?
No. Even in a normal wet season, Bali rain comes in heavy bursts in the afternoon and evening rather than all day. A delayed and shorter season means December 2026 is likely to be drier than a typical December.
What is a positive Indian Ocean Dipole and why does it matter for Bali?
It is a pattern in which the western Indian Ocean runs warmer than the east, pulling rainfall away from Indonesia. When it coincides with a strong El Nino, as it is doing now, the two suppress Indonesian rainfall together and push the monsoon back.
If a dry, quiet October or November in Canggu sounds like the version of Bali you want, this is the window. Villa Zoya and Nomad House both sleep six in Padonan - five minutes from the nearest cafe, seventeen from Berawa beach - with a private pool, covered outdoor bar and a concierge team who will tell you honestly whether the sky is worth the drive to Ubud.
