Canggu Surf in October 2026: The Last Clean Month
October is the last clean month of Canggu's surf season, and that makes it the best month of the year to be in the water here. Offshore mornings, head-high swell, and a lineup that has finally emptied out after the August crush. From November the monsoon swings the wind round to the southwest, it blows straight onshore into every west-coast break, and Canggu turns choppy for four months.
So if you are weighing up a Bali trip now against one in January: come now. Waiting costs you the wave.
Here is the version we give guests who turn up with a board bag: which break matches your ability, what a lesson actually costs this year, and the one rule that decides whether your session is good or grim.
Why October is Canggu's last clean month
Bali's dry season runs April to October. What makes it work is not swell — the Indian Ocean sends swell all year. It is wind. Through the dry months the trades come from the southeast, which means they blow offshore across Canggu's west-facing beaches. Offshore wind holds the face of the wave up. That is the entire trick.
In November the monsoon reverses. Wind arrives from the southwest and west, straight onshore, and the same shift that switches Canggu off switches Bali's east coast on — Keramas and Nusa Dua start working. So November is not a dead month for Bali. It is a dead month for Canggu.
October also brings light, variable winds, swell angles tilting more southerly, and a lineup at a fraction of its July density. Accommodation resets too — shoulder-season rates across the island sit roughly 20 to 40 percent below the August peak. The honest caveat: October can still hand you a flat week. Canggu wants head-high to slightly overhead. Below that it goes inconsistent, and it does not hold big swell the way the Bukit reefs do.

Which Canggu break actually suits you
Canggu is not one wave. It is five beaches strung along the coast, running south to north: Berawa, Nelayan, Batu Bolong, Echo and Pererenan. Paddling out at the wrong one is the most common mistake visitors make.
Batu Bolong — the beginner's break. Slow rights and lefts peeling more than 100 metres around a lava reef. Ridable at one foot, genuinely fun at five. Nearly every surf school in Canggu teaches here, which is both the appeal and the problem.
Old Man's — a couple of hundred metres south of Batu Bolong, mellower again, best at low to mid tide. Softens off at high tide. Longboards and first-timers.
Berawa — the intermediate step up. The Peak works across all tides and is the versatile one. The Ledge is a fast barrelling right over shallow reef at low tide, experienced surfers only. The Bombie sits further out and needs a solid swell to switch on.
Echo Beach — black sand, and Echo Left (everyone calls it Stairs) is a powerful left over shallow reef. Mid to high tide only; low tide exposes the reef. Intermediate and up.
River Mouth and The Sandbar — the advanced end. River Mouth is a hollow right that holds up to one and a half times overhead at high tide. The Sandbar is an A-frame over sand, which is where the aerial crowd goes.
Nelayan and Pererenan — the quiet ones. Nelayan is inconsistent but empty, and picks up kitesurfers when the wind comes on. Pererenan has a long relaxed right and a steeper left, and stays reliably less crowded than Echo.
Check the tide before you check the swell. Half of Canggu's breaks change character entirely between low and high, and thirty seconds on a tide app tells you which one you are walking into.
The difference between a great session in Canggu and a miserable one is almost never the swell. It is whether you picked the break that matches the tide you are standing in. — Anushka Lockhart, Evarah Collection

What surfing Canggu actually costs in 2026
Surf schools cluster on the sand at Batu Bolong and Old Man's, and you can walk up and book the same morning. Every format below runs two hours and includes a board and rash guard.
Group lesson, three to five people: IDR 300,000 to 450,000 per person (roughly USD 20 to 30).
Semi-private, two people: IDR 600,000 to 825,000 per person.
Private one-to-one: IDR 900,000 to 1,200,000.
Board rental runs IDR 60,000 to 100,000 for two hours on a standard soft-top or longboard. A performance board is closer to IDR 150,000 to 200,000 for a full day. Those are the prices on the sand. Book the identical lesson through a hotel desk or an online aggregator and you will usually pay a premium for the convenience.
The 7am rule, and the things nobody tells you
Be in the water before 9am. Ideally before 7. Dawn is when the trades glass everything off, and by mid-morning the sideshore has arrived and the Batu Bolong lineup looks like a car park. If you want space rather than perfection, Berawa and Pererenan hold up much better through the middle of the day.
Two things about the bottom. Most of Canggu is reef with sandy patches, not the forgiving sand you get at Kuta, so watch your feet at Echo on a low tide. And after heavy rain the water near River Mouth carries runoff from upstream. If you are prone to ear infections, pack earplugs or surf somewhere else that morning.
Last one, and it matters more than the rest: the lineups here are crowded and competitive. Do not drop in. Give priority to locals. Canggu already has plenty of visiting surfers who ignore both, and you will be treated accordingly.
Where to stay if you want to surf every morning
The 7am rule is an accommodation decision as much as an alarm-clock one. If you are staying 40 minutes down the coast in Seminyak, you will not do it twice. Evarah Collection's two villas sit in Padonan, northern Canggu — about 17 minutes to Berawa beach, and a short run up the coast road to Batu Bolong and Echo.
Both sleep six across three bedrooms with a private pool, outdoor shower and a full kitchen, which covers the two things a surf trip actually needs: somewhere to rinse the salt off a board at eight, and somewhere to make coffee at six. Villa Zoya is the Mediterranean one — double-height living room, a kitchen island that seats eight. Nomad House is concrete, glass and tropical planting, and photographs better than it has any right to.
Canggu surf FAQ
Is October a good time to surf in Bali?
Yes. October is the last month of the dry season, which means offshore morning winds and clean conditions on the west coast, including Canggu. It is also noticeably less crowded and cheaper than July or August. From November the wind flips onshore here and Bali's east coast becomes the better call.
Can a complete beginner surf in Canggu?
Yes, at Batu Bolong or Old Man's. Both break slowly over a lava reef, both are ridable at one foot, and both have surf schools operating directly on the sand. Avoid Echo Beach and River Mouth until you can reliably paddle back out through whitewater.
How much is a surf lesson in Canggu?
In 2026 a two-hour group lesson runs IDR 300,000 to 450,000 per person, semi-private is IDR 600,000 to 825,000, and a private lesson is IDR 900,000 to 1,200,000. Board and rash guard are included in all three.
What time of day should I surf in Canggu?
Before 9am, and before 7am if you can face it. Morning offshore winds hold the wave face up and the crowd is thinnest at first light. Evening sessions can still be good once the trades drop, but the middle of the day is usually sideshore and busy.
October runs out faster than people expect, and November takes the wind with it. If you want a base that puts you in the water before the crowd and back at your own pool by nine, both villas are still taking dates this season.
