Saraswati Day 2026: What Happens in Bali on 31 October

Saraswati Day 2026 falls on Saturday 31 October. It is the Balinese Hindu day for books, learning and the goddess of knowledge, and it comes round every 210 days. The morning after, Sunday 1 November, is Banyu Pinaruh, when families head to the sea or a river mouth for a purification ritual called melukat. If you are in Canggu that weekend, you will see both.

Neither comes with a stage, a ticket or a parade route. These are household and school holy days, which means the evidence is everywhere and the explanation is nowhere. Here is the explanation, plus what to do about it as a visitor.

What is Saraswati Day, and why do Balinese bring books to temple?

Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, literature and the arts. Her day falls on Saturday Umanis of Wuku Watugunung in the 210-day pawukon calendar, the last day of that cycle. It is not tied to the moon or to the Gregorian calendar, which is why it drifts around the year and why no two years look alike on your phone.

The practice is more physical than you might expect. Books, lontar palm-leaf manuscripts and writing tools are set out as offerings, and prayers are held in temples, homes, offices and schools. According to the Sundarigama manuscript, worship happens in the morning and afternoon. A common offering is a rice figure shaped like two geckos, called cicak, because the gecko is said to reflect Saraswati's all-knowing nature.

In practical terms: expect children in traditional dress on the roads, small offerings on shop counters, and a general sense that the island is being polite to its own libraries.

What is Banyu Pinaruh, and what happens on the beach near Canggu?

Banyu Pinaruh is the Sunday after Saraswati Day, in wuku Sinta, and it marks the start of a new pawukon cycle. Balinese Hindus go to water, meaning the sea or a campuhan where fresh water meets salt, to perform melukat. The idea is simple: knowledge was celebrated yesterday, so today the mind gets washed.

Expect groups in white and temple-coloured sashes, priests, offerings floating on the surf and a lot of early starts. Guides to the big Sanur and Pandawa gatherings suggest arriving before 5:30am, and the same rule applies if you want to watch anywhere on this coast. Canggu's black-sand beaches are a short ride, or from Padonan about a 17-minute walk to Berawa, so there is no reason to be loud about it.

Nobody on that beach is performing for you. The best thing a visitor can do on Saraswati Day is notice, and then get out of the way.

How should visitors behave on Saraswati Day and Banyu Pinaruh?

You are allowed to be there. You are not allowed to be in the way. The short version:

  • Stay well back from anyone praying, and never walk between a group and the water or a shrine.

  • Do not step on canang sari, the small woven offerings on the ground. Walk around them.

  • Ask before photographing people, and skip the drone entirely. Nothing ruins a purification ritual like a hovering camera.

  • If you do join a temple visit, wear a sarong and sash, cover your shoulders, and follow what the locals do.

  • Keep voices low. Early morning on the beach is a prayer, not a photoshoot.

Unlike Nyepi, nothing shuts down. The airport, roads, cafés and restaurants run as normal. Some schools and offices will be quiet, and you may find a favourite warung opening a little later on the Sunday morning.

What else is on the Balinese calendar that week?

The days around Saraswati stack up neatly, so a long weekend gives you a lot of Bali for very little planning.

  • Sunday 25 October: Purnama, the full moon, and Watugunung Runtuh, the end of the cycle.

  • Saturday 31 October: Saraswati Day.

  • Sunday 1 November: Banyu Pinaruh, with melukat at the coast.

  • Monday 2 November: Soma Ribek, a day linked to rice and abundance.

  • Wednesday 4 November: Pagerwesi, a day for protecting the knowledge you just honoured.

If you want a calmer, more visitor-friendly place to see Saraswati honoured, Pura Taman Saraswati in Ubud is a temple with a lotus pond dedicated to her. Allow a long, traffic-dependent drive from Canggu and go early. The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival runs 21 to 25 October, so a literary trip into Ubud the weekend before makes a certain kind of sense.

Where to stay in Canggu for Saraswati weekend

Padonan, in northern Canggu, is the quiet end of the neighbourhood. That matters on a ceremony weekend: you can walk to a café in five minutes, reach the beach on foot, and still be back by the pool before the sun gets serious. The airport is about 45 minutes away, in normal traffic.

Evarah Collection runs two design-led villas here, both with three bedrooms for up to six guests, a private pool, daily housekeeping and a concierge who will tell you which beach is doing what on Sunday morning. Villa Zoya is the warm, Mediterranean-influenced one with a double-height living room and a kitchen island that seats eight. Nomad House is raw concrete, big glass and jungle planting. Pick the one that matches your group, not the one that photographs better.

Timing helps too. BMKG expects the 2026/27 rainy season to arrive late, around late November to December, so early November is still a good window.

Saraswati Day Bali 2026: your questions answered

When is Saraswati Day in Bali in 2026?

Saturday 31 October 2026. Banyu Pinaruh follows on Sunday 1 November, and Pagerwesi on Wednesday 4 November.

What is Banyu Pinaruh?

Banyu Pinaruh is the Sunday after Saraswati Day. Balinese Hindus go to the sea or a campuhan to perform melukat, a purification ritual that symbolises cleansing the soul with knowledge. It also marks the start of a new pawukon cycle.

Will shops and restaurants close on Saraswati Day?

No. Unlike Nyepi, Saraswati Day is not an island-wide shutdown. Roads, the airport, cafés and restaurants operate normally, although some schools and offices hold prayers.

Can tourists watch or join melukat on Banyu Pinaruh?

Visitors can generally watch respectfully from a distance. Join only if you are invited or visiting a temple that welcomes guests, wear a sarong and sash, and never photograph people praying without asking.

Planning a trip around Saraswati weekend or the quieter weeks of early November? Stay in Padonan, walk to the beach on Sunday morning, and let someone else worry about the traffic.
