Ubud Writers Festival 2026: A Canggu Guide to 21-25 October
The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival returns to Taman Baca in Ubud from 21 to 25 October 2026. The opening gala is Wednesday 21 October. The main programme runs Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October: over 100 sessions, more than 150 writers, thinkers, journalists and poets. A four-day international pass is IDR 7,800,000 (about USD 460). A one-day pass is IDR 2,400,000 (about USD 140).
This is the 23rd edition. It began in 2004 as a community response to the first Bali bombing and has grown into the largest literary festival in Southeast Asia. And yes, you can do it from Canggu without changing where you sleep. Ubud is roughly 75 minutes from Padonan on a decent run, and about two hours on a bad one.

The 2026 theme: Samarasa
This year's theme is Samarasa: Awareness. Empathy. Action. It comes from Sanskrit philosophy and describes the harmony between Citta (mind), Rasa (heart) and Karsa (action). In practice it means the programme keeps returning to the same question: what do you do once you actually know something?

The 2026 festival artwork is by Balinese artist Wayan Aris Sarmanta, a surrealist study of humans, nature and mythical beings tangled together. It is worth seeing in print rather than on a phone screen.
Who is speaking in 2026
The international line-up is the strongest reason to make the drive. Confirmed names include:

The sessions that will fill up first are the ones with teeth. Literature: A Mirror to the World puts Kiran Desai and Adania Shibli together. Defying Silence Together pairs Dandhy Laksono with Randa Abdel-Fattah, whose Adelaide Writers' Week disinvitation triggered mass withdrawals. The Bandung Conference of Writers pulls voices from across the Pan-Asian-African world, echoing the 1955 original. The Story of a Heart, with Rachel Clarke, is the one people will still be talking about at dinner.
There is lighter programming too, and it is genuinely good: late-night comedy, spoken word galas, literary lunches, film screenings and live music after dark, all included in a festival pass.
What a pass costs in 2026
Prices are tiered, and the tier you qualify for makes a large difference. Four-day passes:
International: IDR 7,800,000 (approx. USD 460 / AUD 649)
KITAS, KITAP and ASEAN citizens: IDR 3,900,000 (approx. USD 230)
International students: IDR 2,700,000 (approx. USD 160)
Indonesian: IDR 1,700,000 (approx. USD 105)
Indonesian university students: IDR 700,000 (approx. USD 45)
Indonesian school students: free, for the first time in 2026
One-day passes run from IDR 2,400,000 for international visitors down to IDR 600,000 for Indonesians and free for Indonesian school students. Concession tiers need proof on the day: a KTP, a KITAS copy, an ASEAN ID card or a valid student card. Bring it, or you pay the international rate at the gate.
One thing that catches people out: special events, masterclasses and cultural workshops are ticketed separately from the festival pass. The culinary walking tours, the language breakfasts and the writers' retreats are all their own line item. If you want one, book it before you arrive.
There are also two higher tiers. Friends Circle (USD 350) adds the Festival Lounge, reserved seating, a curated lunch and a daily drink at Indus Writers Bar. Patron Circle (USD 1,050) adds the opening gala, a cocktail party with headliners and an intimate dinner with writers. Both are capped.

Doing the festival from Canggu: the honest version
Most festival coverage assumes you are staying in Ubud. You do not have to. Padonan to Ubud is about 40 kilometres. Leave Canggu by 7:30am and you will be in Ubud in 70 to 80 minutes. Leave at 9am and you are looking at closer to two hours, most of it crawling through Kedewatan.
A private driver for the day costs roughly IDR 700,000 to 900,000 including waiting time, which is the right call: sessions run from mid-morning to late evening, and you do not want to ride a scooter back down the Ubud bypass at 11pm in October drizzle. Split between six people, it is cheaper than two festival coffees each.
Our advice after several years of watching guests do this: buy a one-day pass for the Saturday or Sunday, go hard on a single day, and spend the rest of the week on the coast. The four-day pass only makes financial sense if you genuinely intend to be in Ubud four days running, and by day three the drive stops being charming.
Late October is also the seam between dry and wet season. Expect warm, bright mornings and the occasional heavy afternoon downpour that clears within the hour. Ubud sits at altitude and runs several degrees cooler than Canggu, so take a layer for the evening sessions. Taman Baca is partly open-air.
If you are building the trip around the festival, base yourself somewhere with room to spread out and actually read what you buy.
