Bali in the School Holidays 2026: A Family Trip Guide

If you are timing Bali around the school holidays, the good news is that the main breaks line up with the dry season, which is the best weather of the year. The catch is that those same windows are peak season: busiest, priciest, and the first to sell out. For a family trip, that means one rule above all others, book early.

The big windows are the Australian school holidays, especially the winter break across late June and July and the spring break in late September and early October, and the UK and European summer holidays from late July through August. All fall inside Bali's dry season. All are busy. And all reward families who lock in their villa months ahead.

We run two family-friendly villas in Canggu, and the school-holiday months are when we see the most groups travelling with kids. Here is how the term dates line up with Bali's weather, and why a private villa tends to beat a row of hotel rooms when you are travelling as a family.

When the school holidays line up with Bali's best weather

Bali's dry season runs April to October, with reliable sunshine, lower humidity and calmer seas. That overlaps neatly with the major school holidays in the markets that travel to Bali most, which is why these months feel so busy. The weather is genuinely excellent. You are simply sharing it with everyone else who has the same school calendar.

The trade-off is crowds, traffic and price. Popular beaches, cafes and attractions get busy, Canggu roads slow down, and accommodation rates climb. None of it ruins a family trip, but it does reward planning, the right base, and booking before the good villas go.

Australian school holidays in Bali

Australia is Bali's biggest visitor market, and the school-holiday peaks are easy to feel on the ground. The winter break across late June and July is the largest, overlapping with global peak season. The spring break in late September and early October is quieter and lands in lovely shoulder-season weather. Shorter autumn and summer breaks also send families over throughout the year.

If your dates are fixed by the Australian school calendar, June to July means peak weather and peak demand, so book early and expect higher rates. Late September is the sweet spot: still dry, noticeably calmer, and better value. Exact term dates vary by state, so check your own before you lock flights.

UK and European school holidays in Bali

For UK and European families, the summer holidays from late July through August are the natural window, and they coincide with Bali's driest, sunniest stretch, August is the single driest month. It is a long flight, so most families come for two weeks or more, which is exactly where a villa with space and a kitchen starts to pay off.

Because August is global peak, it is also the busiest and most expensive month. The villas and family resorts that work best sell out first. If you have flexibility around the edges of the holidays, late July or the start of September trims both crowds and cost while keeping the good weather.

What to do in Bali with kids

Canggu and the wider south keep kids busy for a fortnight without trying. Waterbom in Kuta is one of Asia's best water parks and an easy full-day out. Bali has zoos, safari parks and turtle sanctuaries for younger children, gentle beginner surf at Batu Bolong and Berawa with patient local instructors, and calm swimming beaches over in Sanur and Nusa Dua for the smallest ones. Add a Balinese cooking class, a day in the Ubud rice fields, and plenty of pool time at the villa, and the days fill themselves.

The school-holiday months also mean more on the calendar generally, more events, more kids' activities, and more other families around, which can be a plus when your children want playmates. A villa with a pool gives them a safe base to burn off energy between outings, which is half the battle on a long trip with young ones.

Why a villa beats hotel rooms for families

With kids, a private villa changes the maths. Instead of booking two or three hotel rooms and eating every meal out, a family gets one secure compound, a kitchen, a pool nobody else is using, and space to spread out. Everyone is under one roof, which matters when there are early bedtimes and jet-lagged toddlers in play.

  • A private pool the kids can use any time, with no shared-pool rules or crowds.

  • A full kitchen and big dining table for easy breakfasts and fuss-free dinners in.

  • Daily housekeeping and a concierge to arrange drivers, cots, and day trips.

  • More space than connecting hotel rooms, often for a comparable total price.

  • A quiet base away from the strip, so kids sleep while parents relax.

Split between a family or two, a three-bedroom villa often lands close to the cost of multiple hotel rooms while giving you far more space and flexibility. Our honest villa-versus-hotel breakdown runs the numbers, and the where-to-stay guide helps you pick a family-friendly corner of Canggu.

Frequently asked questions

When are the school holidays in Bali for Australian families?

The main windows are the winter break across late June and July and the spring break in late September and early October, plus shorter autumn and summer breaks. Exact dates vary by Australian state, so check your own term calendar. June to July is peak season; late September is quieter and better value.

Is August a good time to take kids to Bali?

Yes for weather, August is Bali's driest, sunniest month. It is also global peak season, coinciding with UK and European summer holidays, so it is the busiest and priciest time. Book your villa well ahead, and consider late July or early September to trim crowds and cost.

Is Bali good for a family holiday?

Very. Warm weather, short flights from Australia, family-friendly villas, calm beaches in areas like Sanur and Nusa Dua, and plenty for kids to do. Canggu suits active families who want surf, cafes and space, especially from a private villa with a pool.

How far in advance should families book a villa in Bali?

For the school-holiday peaks, book several months ahead, ideally four to six or more for the busiest weeks. Family-friendly villas with the right number of bedrooms sell out first, so the earlier you secure your dates, the better your choice and price.

Lock in the family dates before they go

School-holiday dates do not move, so the villa is the thing to secure first. If you are weighing the options, our villa-versus-hotel breakdown shows why families rarely go back to hotel rooms, and the where to stay in Canggu guide points you to the calmer, family-friendly corners.
