Bali's Water Taxi Is Coming. Here's What It Means for Canggu.

Getting from Ngurah Rai Airport to Canggu is one of those rites of passage nobody asked for. Sit in gridlock for 90 minutes on a good day, two hours on a bad one, and arrive at your villa sweaty and slightly furious. That's about to change.

Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation has announced a water taxi route connecting Sekeh Beach — directly adjacent to the airport — to Berawa Beach in Canggu. Journey time: 30 minutes. The same trip by road currently takes 90 minutes to two and a half hours, depending on when you land.

What We Know So Far

The project is backed by IDR 1.2 trillion (approximately USD 73 million) in government investment, with PT ASDP — Indonesia's state-owned ferry operator — designated to run it. The route departs from a new pier near the airport at Sekeh Beach and arrives at Berawa Beach, roughly 1.5 km from Padonan and the main Canggu café strip.

The Bali Transportation Agency is targeting 2026 for sea taxi trials, with pier infrastructure construction scheduled to begin in August 2026 and complete by July 2027. This is not operational tomorrow — but with a named operator, a specific construction start date, and government funding confirmed, it's further along than most Bali transport announcements.

Why This Actually Matters

Canggu's traffic is its most cited flaw. Ask anyone who's stayed here more than a week — the airport run is a gamble you'll lose at least once. The water taxi bypasses all of it. Entirely.

For Berawa specifically, this changes the arrival experience entirely. Currently, guests flying into Ngurah Rai who want to reach a villa in Padonan or Berawa factor road time into their trip psychology — it sets a tone before you've even unpacked. Arriving by sea, along Bali's southern coastline, is a different kind of beginning. If the route expands as early proposals suggest — Uluwatu and Nusa Penida connections are in scope — Bali stops being an island where you pick one base and stay put, and starts being a network you actually move through.

The Honest Caveat

"Scheduled for 2026" in Indonesian government transport timelines has historically meant 2028 with optimism. The Detailed Engineering Design study hasn't been finished. Construction hasn't started. Ticket pricing hasn't been announced. There are still open questions about demand and whether the pricing will work for the mid-tier traveller or only serve premium passengers.

That said — this one has real government money behind it, a named state operator in PT ASDP, and a specific enough construction schedule that it has more credibility than most. Watch this one.

What It Means If You're Staying in Canggu

For villa guests arriving now, your airport transfer still needs booking through your concierge. A private car remains the best option until the water taxi is operational. Allow 90 minutes to be safe; 45 if you land before 9am.

Once it's running, the picture for Canggu changes significantly. Evarah Collection's Villa Zoya and Nomad House both sit in Padonan — roughly 1.5 km from the planned Berawa Beach pier. From there, a short ojek or taxi with no traffic anxiety. That makes two of Canggu's most design-led villas reachable in under 35 minutes from the airport.
