Tumpek Wayang falls on Saturday 10 October 2026. It is the day Balinese Hindus bless their wayang kulit shadow puppets, the leather figures that have carried the Ramayana and Mahabharata to village audiences for centuries, and honour Sanghyang Iswara, the Lord of Puppeteers. If you are in Canggu that weekend, expect fresh offerings on every doorstep, gamelan rehearsals drifting over compound walls, and a few quiet ceremonies no tour bus will ever find.

It is not a public holiday and nothing closes. That is the point. Tumpek Wayang is a working artist's holy day, which makes it one of the easiest ceremonies to witness respectfully from a base in Padonan. Three weeks later, on 31 October, Saraswati follows with the same theme from the other direction: books, knowledge and the goddess behind both.

Here is what actually happens, where to go, and how not to be the tourist standing in the middle of someone's prayer.

What is Tumpek Wayang, exactly?

Balinese Hinduism runs on two calendars at once. Alongside the familiar 12-month one sits the Pawukon, a 210-day cycle of 30 weeks. Tumpek days are the Saturdays that close particular weeks in that cycle, and Tumpek Wayang closes Wuku Wayang, the week named for shadow puppetry. Because 210 days is roughly seven months, it comes round about twice a year and wanders across the Gregorian calendar. This year it lands on 10 October.

On the day, dalang (puppeteers) take their puppets out of their boxes and lay them out as if a performance were about to begin. Flowers, incense and holy water are offered. Gamelan often plays. The puppets are treated as vessels for spiritual energy, not props, so the blessing matters: it resets the tools of a storytelling tradition that is part theatre, part sermon, part village newspaper.

What happens on 10 October?

Most of Tumpek Wayang is private and small. You will see a handful of things around Canggu and the wider island:

  • Puppet blessings in family compounds and dalang homes. These are private, so do not walk in uninvited.

  • Banten offerings of woven palm leaf, flowers, rice cakes and fruit, placed at shrines, workshops and doorways.

  • Gamelan and, in some villages, wayang performances at the banjar hall or temple, usually after dark.

  • Sudamala purification. Children born in Wuku Wayang are traditionally considered vulnerable to Bhatara Kala, so families ask a dalang to tell the story of Kala's birth and make holy water (toya penglukatan) for the child.

A wayang puppet is not a prop on Tumpek Wayang. It is a colleague getting a day off and a blessing. Evarah Collection editorial, Canggu

Where can you see wayang kulit near Canggu?

Honest answer: not usually in Canggu itself. Canggu is surf lessons and smoothie bowls. Wayang kulit's home ground is Ubud, the Gianyar villages and Klungkung. Ubud is about an hour from Padonan on a quiet day and noticeably longer on a Saturday evening, so go early or stay out there for dinner.

The same weekend gives you a second option. The Klungkung Heritage Festival runs 10 to 11 October in Klungkung, and the Gebug Seraya Festival runs 10 to 12 October in Karangasem. Both are long drives from Canggu, so treat them as a day out rather than a detour. Performance times shift with the temple calendar, so confirm anything before you set off. Our concierge can phone ahead and find a driver who knows which banjar is hosting what.

How to behave at a Tumpek Wayang ceremony

You are a guest at a religious occasion, and the rules are simple:

  • Wear a sarong and sash if you enter a temple or banjar compound. Cover your shoulders.

  • Never step over offerings on the ground, and keep your head lower than a priest or the shrine.

  • Ask before you photograph people praying. Switch off the flash and the phone ringer.

  • Leave a donation in the box at the temple. Cash, small notes, no ceremony about it.

  • Give processions right of way. Balinese ceremonies beat Grab drivers every time.

Saraswati on 31 October: the sequel

Saraswati Day on Saturday 31 October honours the goddess of knowledge. Books and lontar palm-leaf manuscripts are blessed, schoolchildren pray in white and yellow, and by tradition many Balinese avoid reading and writing for part of the day. Our guide to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival on 21 to 25 October covers the modern version of the same impulse.

The day after, Sunday 1 November, is Banyu Pinaruh, when many people go to the sea or a spring for purification. Expect Canggu's beaches to see more white-clad worshippers than surfers at sunrise. Give them space.
