So the honest answer for anyone booking Bali right now is: nothing has changed yet, and the direction of travel is obvious. Indonesia wants you to sort your visa before you get on the plane, and it is willing to charge you IDR 250,000 extra for the privilege of not bothering.

Here is what is actually confirmed, what is still a proposal, and the ten minutes of admin that will save you an hour in an arrivals queue at Ngurah Rai.

What Indonesia announced in August 2026

On 12 August 2026, Immigration published a proposed two-tier price for the B1 visa on arrival. Apply online in advance and the government fee would be IDR 750,000. Turn up and pay at the airport counter and it would be IDR 1,000,000. The current fee for both routes is IDR 500,000.

The reasoning was stated plainly: differential pricing is meant to push visitors towards arranging entry digitally before departure, thin out the crowd at airport immigration and speed up arrivals. That is a fair objective for anyone who has landed at Ngurah Rai at 1am behind three widebodies.

As of early September 2026, no implementing regulation has been issued, no effective date has been given, and the official e-visa portal still shows IDR 500,000. Some agents expect the change to land in Q4 2026. Treat the new figures as a strong signal, not a live price. If you are travelling before the end of the year, budget IDR 1,000,000 per person and be pleasantly surprised.

e-VOA or the airport counter: the fee is the smallest difference

Even at today's identical price, the two routes are not the same product. An approved e-VOA is linked to your passport before you land, which unlocks the part that actually matters.

• No queue at the VOA payment counter — you go straight to immigration clearance.

• Autogate access at Ngurah Rai for holders of a biometric passport with an approved e-VOA. Immigration puts a successful autogate clearance at roughly 15 to 25 seconds.

• Children aged 6 and over can use the autogates too. Under 6, a parent walks them through a staffed counter.

• Extensions can be filed through the online immigration system rather than leaning on the conventional counter process.

A visa on arrival is 30 days from the day you land, extendable once for another 30, so 60 days maximum. The extension currently costs another IDR 500,000 and must be filed before the original 30 days expire. Overstaying is IDR 1,000,000 per day, so this is not a deadline to be relaxed about.

The arrival card people forget until check-in

Separate from the visa, and free, is the All Indonesia arrival card. It replaced the paper customs, health and quarantine forms and it is mandatory for every international arrival. You file it at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the All Indonesia app within 72 hours of arrival — not earlier, or the system rejects it.

What it means if you are booking Canggu for late 2026

Financially, not much. Even at the top proposed number, IDR 1,000,000 is roughly USD 60 — a rounding error against a long-haul fare and one dinner in Berawa. The real cost is time, and it is paid at the worst possible moment: the end of a fourteen-hour flight, at 1am, with a manual queue in front of you.

The fix takes about ten minutes the day before you fly. Apply for the e-VOA on the official immigration portal. File the All Indonesia arrival card. Pay the tourist levy. Save all three QR codes to your phone and email them to yourself. Then land, walk through an autogate and get in the car.
