How far is Canggu from the airport, really?
Canggu sits roughly 13 to 16 kilometres north of the airport, depending on which part. Berawa is the closest edge; Pererenan and Padonan are a little further. On paper that is a twenty minute drive. In practice, southern Bali has some of the heaviest traffic in Southeast Asia, and the Kerobokan corridor into Canggu is the pinch point where it all backs up.
Reliable numbers for 2026: about 45 minutes to an hour late at night or early morning, 60 to 90 minutes through the day, and occasionally a full two hours in the evening peak. August, the busiest tourist month of the year, is the worst of it. If your flight lands in the afternoon, plan for the higher end and do not book a sunset dinner you cannot move. The airport lounge rule nobody warns you about
Here is what trips people up in 2026. Grab and Gojek are completely legal at Ngurah Rai, but they cannot pick up at the curb. Drivers collect from dedicated, air-conditioned ride-hailing lounges inside the parking buildings at both the international and domestic terminals. You book in the app, then walk, luggage and all, to the assigned bay. It is a five to ten minute trek, and after a long-haul flight it feels a good deal longer.
Koptax and the new Blue Bird electric taxis are the only cars permitted to collect directly from arrivals. So the real trade-off is simple: save a little with Grab and do the walk, or pay slightly more for a car that meets you at the door. With kids, a surfboard bag, or a 2am landing, that walk is worth paying to skip.
Most cars heading north take the Bali Mandara Toll Road first, the elevated highway that runs across Benoa Bay, before dropping onto the surface streets through Kerobokan. That toll stretch is the fast, easy part of the trip. Everything after the exit is where the minutes disappear.
How to not get scammed on arrival
The old airport taxi mafia is tamer than it once was, but the touts have not vanished. The classic move in 2026: someone approaches you inside the terminal or just past the doors, asks 'Grab? Gojek? You have a car booked?' and walks you to an unmetered taxi at three times the price. Remember that your actual Grab driver will never find you inside the terminal, because they are waiting in the lounge.
A few rules keep you safe. Only get into a Koptax or Blue Bird from the official counter, or a Grab or Gojek you booked yourself in the app. Agree the price before the wheels move. Ignore anyone who approaches you first. And know that a few Canggu neighbourhoods are ride-hailing red zones, so your driver may quietly drop you a street away from the pin.
