Kedungu 2026: Canggu's Quieter Surf Village, 30 Minutes West

Kedungu is the surf village about 30 minutes west of Canggu, just past Tanah Lot in Tabanan Regency, where the black sand is wider, the lineup is thinner and the cliff-top bar still has beanbags instead of a minimum spend. If you are staying in Canggu and want one afternoon that feels like Bali before the beach clubs arrived, this is it: surf the morning, eat at a warung, and be on the headland at Tanjung Kedungu by 5pm for sunset.

It is also having a moment. Travel press has started calling it the next stop after Canggu, Pererenan and Seseh, which usually means you have about two years before someone opens a beach club with a resident DJ. Go now.

October is the right month for it. The dry season is on its last legs, mornings are still glassy, and BMKG says the rains will arrive late this year. Here is what to know before you make the drive.

Where is Kedungu, and how far is it from Canggu?

Kedungu sits in Tabanan Regency, on the stretch of coast west of Tanah Lot temple. Canggu ends, Pererenan and Seseh follow, then the villas thin out and the rice fields take over. Kedungu is what comes after that.

From Padonan in northern Canggu, budget roughly 30 minutes by car, and more if the roads around Tanah Lot are clogged with sunset traffic. Some guides say 15 minutes. Those guides were written at 6am. Access is along Jalan Pantai Kedungu, which runs straight to a wide car park on the beach with warungs, showers and toilets.

Book a driver or a Grab for the evening rather than riding a scooter. The village roads are dark after sunset, and the drive home is the one that matters.

Surfing Kedungu: the three breaks and who they suit

Kedungu is a reef-and-sand setup with three distinct waves. Pick the right one and it is the friendliest lineup on this coast. Pick the wrong one and Tabanan reef will share its opinions with your shins.

  • The main peak. An A-frame right in front of the warungs, breaking left and right over a flat reef shelf. On small swells the inside is soft enough for beginners; on bigger days it suits intermediates working on their turns.

  • The left-hander. Towards the cliff, to the left of the main peak. Longer, faster rides, best at lower tides, with sharp rock, coral and sea urchins underneath. Wear booties.

  • Loloan shorebreak. Short, steep and powerful. Advanced surfers only. It is not a learning wave, whatever your instructor's cousin says.

Kedungu works on all tides but is most comfortable at mid to low, and it likes a south to west swell. Board rental and instructors are right on the beach, so you can turn up with nothing but a towel. Go early. The morning offshore is the whole point, and by lunchtime the wind has usually had its way with it.

If you want to warm up closer to home first, our October surf guide covers Canggu's own breaks, lesson prices and tide timing.

The Beach Love: Kedungu's sunset spot

The cliff at the end of the beach is officially Tanjung Kedungu. Everyone calls it The Beach Love, or Pantai Cinta, after the bar that put beanbags on the headland. It looks over black sand, rice fields and the open Indian Ocean, and on a clear October evening it holds its own against Uluwatu, with a fraction of the crowd.

Arrive between 4:30 and 5pm if you want a beanbag in the front row. The sun goes down just after 6pm in October, and by 5:30 the good seats are gone. Order an arak cocktail or a cold Bintang, keep your food expectations at warung level, and stay for the twenty minutes after sunset when the sky does its best work.

Kedungu and Tanah Lot in one afternoon

Tanah Lot is a short drive east of Kedungu, so the pairing is obvious. Since 1 April 2026, foreign adults pay Rp100,000 and children Rp60,000. It is cash only, there is no online booking, and the ticket also covers Pura Batu Bolong, the second sea temple on the same stretch of cliffs.

Our honest order of play: Tanah Lot at 3pm, while the tour coaches are still on the road, then Kedungu for sunset. Do it the other way round and you will be fighting every coach in Tabanan for the same view. Tourists cannot enter the temple itself, so you are there for the rock, the waves and the sheer setting of the thing, not for a look inside.

Where to eat in Kedungu

Kedungu has not been taken over by matcha yet, but it is heading that way. Three places worth the drive:

  • Little Ripper. Specialty coffee and proper post-surf breakfasts, with an all-day brunch menu that leans homemade and healthy.

  • Kedungu Hype Cafe & Bar. Set back from the beach and loved by the regulars. Coffee in the morning, Balinese arak cocktails at night, local plates and international mains in between.

  • The beach warungs. Plastic chairs, nasi goreng and fresh coconuts. The cheapest lunch on the coast and, quite often, the best.

If you want to splash out, Nirjhara is the five-star hotel a few steps from the sand, and lunch there is a good excuse to see what Tabanan luxury looks like. Then drive home to your own pool.

Should you stay in Kedungu or Canggu?

For most people, Kedungu is better as a day than a base. It is quiet in the evenings, the restaurant list runs out quickly, and anything you want in Canggu or Seminyak is a 30 to 45 minute drive away. Surfers on a two-week mission will love it. Groups who also want brunch, beach clubs and a good dinner within ten minutes will not.

That is the case for Padonan. Northern Canggu is quiet enough to sleep, close enough to Berawa to eat well, and on the right side of town for Kedungu, Pererenan and Tanah Lot. Villa Zoya and Nomad House each sleep six across three bedrooms with a private pool, which means you can surf Kedungu at 7am and be floating in your own water by 10.

Kedungu FAQ

How far is Kedungu from Canggu?

About 30 minutes by car from central or northern Canggu, longer around sunset when Tanah Lot traffic builds. Kedungu is in Tabanan Regency, just west of Tanah Lot temple.

Is Kedungu good for beginner surfers?

Yes, on small swells. Stick to the inside of the main A-frame peak, take a lesson from one of the instructors on the beach, and avoid the left-hander at low tide and the Loloan shorebreak entirely.

What time is sunset at The Beach Love in Kedungu?

Just after 6pm in October. Arrive between 4:30 and 5pm to get a beanbag on the cliff, and bring cash.

How much is the Tanah Lot entrance fee in 2026?

Rp100,000 for foreign adults and Rp60,000 for children since 1 April 2026. It is cash only, paid at the gate, and includes Pura Batu Bolong.

Kedungu is a half-hour drive. The villa you come home to is the other half of the plan.
